STEAM Meets Social Innovation in Niagara

Niagara’s 6 Social event, hosted March 5th, 2016 was a massive success in its delivery of a one day platform.  Just as in Toronto, the event was sold out (80 individuals signed up with an anticipated capacity of only 50). The majority ages ranged from 14 - 20, demonstrating once again the appeal of the program to teens and young adults. 

What was the day like? 

The stage was set by engaging participants to learn a diverse abundance of skills in the world of technology and app building - creating an online and onsite Idealab.  Issues that mattered to the participants were identified.  

In the afternoon, newfound knowledge was applied with the help of mentors and industry experts to address the issues identified by the participants.  Ideas collided and solutions were realized using technology and online tools in a resourceful and effective manner. 

Why was it a success? 

In addition to a tested marketing plan of social media engagement, and a positive relationship with contributors to get word of the event out, collaboration with local partners like ihub Niagara and the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN), proved invaluable.  As a result, 24% of the participants were present because a school had invited them. 

Engagement was naturally a key element, and Learning Through The Arts executed a well developed and concentrated social media campaign - 26% of participants were a result of social media.   

The best part about it? 

Engagement continued long after the event, with messages over Slack and impressions on Twitter.  The 7 PencilCase App Software prizes, 6 MAD Learn licenses and Strategyzer software from are now being used to create apps to benefit the community!

A groundbreaking youth activation event is launching in Toronto during the NBA All Star Weekend

Press Release: Thursday, January 28, 2016, Toronto, On: 6 Social  (The name references six exciting technology tools, and six topics that matter to youth) will be a unique hands-on learning experience that involves a collision of people, communities and ideas.  

6 Social builds upon twenty years of experience by The Royal Conservatory - Learning Through the Arts division in developing youth voices through innovative arts-based learning opportunities.

The event is being organized in partnership Learning Through The Arts and a variety of grassroots organizations, several of which are led by alumni of the Remix ProjectCurrantNISE, and Toronto Youth Equity Strategy.

This is community collaboration with local non-for-profits, businesses and community activists supporting and executing the event February 13th and 14th, all taking place during NBA All Star Weekend, at the Royal Conservatory of Music - TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning

6 Social, will bring together young people from a wide variety of cultural and social backgrounds to explore how leading edge social media technologies can be used to tell their stories, build community engagement, enhance learning and solve problems that matter to them.

We are featuring made-in-Canada technologies such as Slack, PencilCase by Robots and Pencils, Fundrazr (crowdfunding) and more!

We are asking the question: Using technology, how would you solve today’s problems?

Then, over the weekend participants are given the opportunity to use these tools and create innovative solutions alongside industry experts, mentors and we will even have a couple celebrity drop ins. Plus up to $5,000 in prizes.

The goal is to create a 6 Social platform that encourages creativity, design thinking, and hands-on, experiential learning and innovative thinking. 6 Social provides youth with access to technology tools, mentors, and subject matter experts while bringing all levels of the community together.

The event MC is Marlon Palmer, a Toronto-based actor, comedian, and YouTuber, originally hailing from Maple, Ontario. On his channel ThatdudeMCFLY, Palmer produces comedic skits, song parodies, and rants, which have earned him more than 134,000 subscribers, and 19 million views to date.

Music industry guru Lola Plaku will be joining the 6 Social line up as the Special Social Media Guest as she explores how she leveraged social media in her day to day life and career.  Lola is not only the founder and owner of Lola Media Group and ILUVLOLA brand but also the day to day manager for artist French Montana.

The initial activation event in Toronto is a launch pad for community collaboration that will be replicated across Canada over the next year.
