What is 6 Social?

6 Social is an online, interactive, collaborative professional development opportunity for educators. Through engaging, experiential learning, educators and students (Grade 6-11 recommended) develop innovative solutions to challenges that they experience in their school, neighbourhoods and communities.

This is your opportunity to build and connect to a community of educators across Canada who care about the issues that you do and want to effect change. Bring that learning into your classrooms in innovative and dynamic ways that will change your students’ approaches to solving problems forever.

Watching these young, bright minds gather together, their desire and willingness to make a positive change in their community and ultimately in their lives, brings a unique emotional mix of pride and hope, a feeling that any educator is grateful to experience and willing to see more often among the young generation shaping up our future.
— Anamaria Dragoi, OCT, MScEd Manager of Innovation & Academic Engagement, Educational Research & Innovation Hub (ihub)

6 Social is experiential (hands-on) learning for educators & students, leveraging technology to create solutions for issues you care about.

There are 4 modules, with 3 weeks in each module, delivered over the 2017 / 2018 school year, online, with support, as you facilitate what you are learning with your students.  This is your opportunity to build and connect to a community of educators across Canada who care about the issues that you do and want to effect change.

Module 1

Week of Nov 6-20, 2017

Problem Finding

In order to implement an effective solution, you must first dive deep into the problem. We will brainstorm problems and issues that are happening in your community; from poverty to education to health & wellness. What do you care about?  Are other problems caused by this problem?  Who does the problem effect? This is your opportunity to brainstorm, connect with others and receive tools to use in your classroom to honour the students' voice.

Module 2

Week of Feb 5-19, 2017

Solution Finding

Before we decide on the solution, we must first discover and investigate the current solutions that address the problem(s).  What works?  What doesn't?  Identify the gaps and make recommendations. Are there current solutions that exist that need to make some slight changes or do new solutions need to be created? Through this discovery we will then do an Ideation Solution Session.

Module 3

Week of March 5 to 26, 2018 (excluding March Break)

Solution Building

You will feel confident and excited to begin building and prototyping your solution for some of the worlds' most pressing issues. We will collaborate to model how to investigate & validate your assumptions by asking questions, getting feedback and making sure you are spending your time and energy effectively. Get creative, with a variety of tools, brainstorm and connect with others to begin creating something incredible!

Module 4

Week of April 2 to 16, 2018

Solution Storytelling

It's time to start sharing your solution through a storytelling tool.  We will create an an easy to use animation tool and video. It takes a community to make an idea a reality and to continue building your solution. Together, we will host an Online Community Showcase, where you have the opportunity to inspire others by showcasing your solutions to gain support, mentorship and launch your idea.

What will 6 Social look like in Your Classroom?

6 Social is a social innovation program for teachers and students. The Sagonaska School teachers and students worked with 6 Social facilitators John Scully and Hannah Cree from Learning Through the Arts to problem find and problem solve on challenges relating to their learning disabilities. The results were transformative.

Youth pitching their solution on Gender Equality, March 5, 2016 at ihub Niagara.
Throughout the day we brainstormed plenty of issues and ways to solve them using different technology tools. How to make apps without knowing code was the best part. I made plenty of friends and it’s great to know that people care about issues just as much as you do.

University and college funding Access - everyone should have access to education. Pitch at ihub Niagara March 5th, 2016.
Come to 6 Social because it is all about youth and ideas. I got to connect to other youth, mentors, tried out cool technology and put our groups idea into action. It gave youth a voice and explored how to use that voice in a positive way.

Character Education

As a teacher, I saw enthusiasm, I saw engagement and I saw people passionate about what they were doing. These are the things I like to ignite in my classroom and I saw them all through 6 Social. The solution sharing was very energetic and the students were invested in the social issue they were addressing. We couldn’t have asked for a better time.
